Next Generation Firewall (NGFW)

Cisco defines firewall as “A firewall is a network security device that monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic and decides whether to allow or block specific traffic based on a defined set of security rules.”

A firewall uses specific codes to create a wall which will isolate your computer from the Internet . It will then inspects each individual packet of data – inbound to or outbound from your computer. Based on the set rules it will determine whether it should be allowed to pass or be blocked.

According the industry standards there are 5 types of firewalls:

  • Packet Filtering
  • Circuit-Level Filtering
  • Stateful Inspection Firewalls
  • Application-Level Firewall
  • Next-Gen Firewall

Gartner estimates that by 2019 80{ of enterprise traffic will be encrypted and 50 of attacks targeting enterprise will be hidden in encrypted traffic. On top of it, all the new types of technologies such as the SaaS and BYOD that is is used for more productivity. Securing all of these and keeping on top of the productivity is a major challenge for businesses these days.

Hence at AusBorn we encourage our clients to deploy Next Generation Firewall (NGFW). It is a single unit which combines multiple services reducing time and money to deploy and support it. Deep Packet Inspection can decrypt any communication between botnets or Advanced Persistent threats and the attackers using SSL tunnels. It will come with access control which can identify network traffic by user roles.
